Shake it up!

So this is a report on our final day of the DART 2015 trip to New Hampshire... we got up early enough to leave Manchester and head north to the AAA "gem" of Canterbury Shaker Village.  The drive was very nice along country roads and we arrived shortly after opening time.  We headed into the village after buying tickets and immediately went to the small museum where we watched a superb Ken Burns film on the Shakers which really helped put their lives into context.

Canterbury Shaker Village is an historic site and museum. It was one of a number of Shaker communities founded in the 19th century.  It is one of the most intact and authentic surviving Shaker community sites, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1993.

With 25 original Shaker buildings, four reconstructed Shaker buildings and 694 acres of forests, fields, gardens and mill ponds under permanent conservation easement, Canterbury Shaker Village "is dedicated to preserving the 200-year legacy of the Canterbury Shakers and to providing a place for learning, reflection and renewal of the human spirit." (wikipedia)

We each headed out in our own direction and pace and ended up near the entrance around noon. Here are some photos of what we saw...

so off we went to a well rated but mediocre lunch place and a final ice cream at Cremeland before heading off to the airport and our flights home.... another DART completed and a new one in the planning stages for next year... we are thinking a return to the western parts of North America with a possible change up in timing to coordinate with a trip Phil has planned for Ireland for a music tour...

  1. Love these Shaker pictures...especially the two Shaker women with the musical instruments! The architecture is beautiful.
