January vacation (part 1)

We arrived in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for our island getaway. This is the view from our balcony. Lee Cherney arrived about an hour later and we had lunch and did a bit of shopping. Easy dinner tonight pinsa and pasta. More to follow. Steve & Suzanne Friedman  arriving early next week. Winter destinations for those leaving cold behind.

Dinner at Cacio e Pepe where they have an extensive list of Roman Pinsa choices. We were all tired from early morning wake up calls (P & V) and the extensive travel arrangements (L) so we kept it simple. Still a great choice for "pizza".

We spent the day settling in- buying towels at the Chinese store, Phil and Lee buying fruit etc. at the market and I bought paper goods and trash bags at the mini market next door. We had lunch at the newly opened hot spot - Chinese - nearly next door- it was only ok- we won't rush back...

Then we went to Roca de Sal for dinner. We had mixed reactions. We had been here twice last January when we were in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and loved it. We were excited to return to the seafood centric menu in a lovely setting. Sadly when we entered tonight and sat down we found out it was now a pizza and pasta  Italian focused restaurant. The food was actually good but not what we had expected nor what we had been thinking about all afternoon. So while I won't diss the place it's more downscale than it was a year ago and the menu is no longer seafood centric. Gone was my personal favorites of tiradito and asparagus relleno and Phil's positive recollection of the cabrito (goat) and cochinllo (suckling pig) - now it is a pretty standard issue Italian place. Not bad but nothing special. Oh well - everything changes.

The next day Lee rented a car and we did a bit of exploring the island. Here is a selection of photos from various locations, mostly outside Santa Cruz de Tenerife - we went exploring today. We went south along the far coast - stopped for a lunch in Port Cruz at the Mexican place in the hills above the coast (it was not great). The town is crowded with tourists and very much caters to high rise resort development guests. So we made quick work of it and headed out.

We heard about Lee's lost luggage now ready for [pick up at the airport so we headed back for the and then stopped in La Laguna (old capital) to check it out.

We came back into town but decided to venture further north along the coast to the black sand beach Lee remembered from a prior visit.

More to follow in parts 2 and 3....
