Dinner with John Blaser and Stephanie Merrick Blaser Saturday night at Bayan Ko. Tasting menu was full of great flavors. Consensus was the pancit and lumpia course were favorites. We brought a bottle of Louise from DDO. We had glasses of the sparkling wine from Slovenia (tasty and unknown to us.) Missed seeing Chef Lawrence Letrero and Raquel Quadreny. But they made their presence known.
Then on Father's Day I cooked for Phil and Mike & Leslie- skirt steak, au gratin potatoes, asparagus and spinach & mushrooms, along with a salad. Leslie and Mike brought a flourless chocolate cake and some cookies. It was a good dinner, no photos and no leftovers so people must have liked it because there was plenty of food. LOL
Happy Father's Day! I am one of the lucky daughters who got a dad who really loved being a dad and who made sure he was a part of our lives. Miss him - even 25 years after he passed into spirit. But he is so present with us that frequently Phil will say to me "OK Jack!" I am definitely my parents daughter. And I am so grateful for the things they each gave me - a loving supportive space to become fully myself. Happy Father's Day Jack Edgar Heltman 1938-2001.
Then Monday night we had Chnegdu Impressions for dinner. Had a Gramona Corpinat to go with dinner tonight. Tonight we tried a twice cooked pork belly dish that was very zippy! Liked that one. Then also had old standby favorite Zhongs dumplings and of course the soup dumplings (Xiao long bao) as well as the crispy shrimp with broccoli because need to pretend to have a veg! A sandwich place nearby to grab dinner. The place is called Falcon's Handcrafted Sandwiches. The food is excellent - service could absolutely not be nicer - you can BYO - and - the bathrooms are clean! Perfect for a diner style place that's so much better than many of its competitors.
HAPPY 25TH ANNIVERSARY Phil Friedman. It's been quarter century of adventure with you. Let's do at least another decade! The past 30 years have gone by so quickly because time flies when you are having fun. Many many many great memories but for the post I picked our wedding day and then photos from trips we took to celebrate in 2006 (Ukraine) 2011 (Zambia) 2016 (Poland) and 2021 (US family - because COVID)
Tens of thousands of miles all around the world - the best memories were ones we made together.
We celebrated the day with dinner at Bistro Campagne. Among the places we have gone for our anniversary over the years, we've always had a lot of variety. One year we went to Butcher and Burger, we also went to Goosefoot, and Oriole, and El Ideas, and George's Trois, and Oceanique, but this might be our most repeated choice. A few years ago it was warm enough to dine in the garden but tonight it was chilly enough to order onion soup and mussels for starters. We chose our go-to items from the menu. I have the trout and Phil has the chicken. A good solid choice for some classic French bistro fare. No quenelles :-( it's not a Lyonnaise place, but has a credible menu of bistro standards. Our server, Cat Powers, has been our requested server since the days before Alix was born and we used to come here with Laure Vienot-Tronche, Arnaud Tronche, Mary Coy and Sheila Adams. Time flies Alix had her 15th birthday this past spring! Bistro Campagne is still a solid choice - not something that can be said of many restaurants these days.
